Poushali Das

Statement

Poushali Das (b. 1974, West Bengal) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans silk-wash painting, egg tempera on paper and wood, and textile-based experiments in batik, block printing, and bandhani. Rooted in the Santiniketan tradition and further shaped through her postgraduate training at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Vadodara, her work embraces slow, process-driven methods that transform material into contemplative, meditative surfaces. She completed her B.F.A. in Painting from Kala-Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan (2002), and her M.F.A. in Painting from M.S. University of Vadodara (2004). In 2017, she served as a Foreign Professional Advanced Researcher at Musashino Art University, Tokyo, a fellowship supported by the Raza Foundation Travelling Grant. She is also the recipient of the Nandalal Bose Scholarship (2002) and the Junior Research Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India (2004).

Her solo exhibitions include Leaving the Further Journey Towards Infinity, to the Imagination at Kalakriti Gallery, Hyderabad (2022); Moonlit Offerings at Akara Art Gallery, Mumbai (2018); 108 Chanting Beats at Shibata Etsuko Gallery, Ginza, Tokyo, and Nazar Art Gallery, Vadodara (2017); and a solo at Gallery Espace (2006). Das has participated in several notable group exhibitions, including the Lalit Kala Academy, Kerala (2020); Lucid Hallucination of the Existence of Things at Art Centrix Space and Gallery 27, Kerala (2019); India Art Fair with Anant Art Gallery, New Delhi (2018); A NEW SPACE at Nazar Art Gallery, Vadodara (2016); Residual Remnants at Site Art Space, Baroda; the 150th birth anniversary exhibition of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad at Kirti Mandir, Vadodara (2012); and Desh-Pardesh at Art Core Gallery, Derby, UK (2010).
